DUBLIN, Ireland: A man has died and a young girl was hurt after a shooting at a Tesco supermarket in Carlow town.

The shooting happened at 6:15 p.m. on June 1 at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre. Witnesses say the man fired several shots into the ceiling inside the busy store. Shoppers and workers ran for safety as two loud gunshots were heard.

After firing inside, the man went outside and shot himself. Gardaí confirmed that a white Irish man died at the scene from what seemed to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

A girl was also injured, but it is still unclear if she was hit by a bullet or hurt while trying to escape. She was taken to St Luke's General Hospital.

As the shots were fired, security staff and shoppers quickly called emergency services. Gardaí and other emergency teams arrived quickly while crowds ran from the shopping center.

One local man who saw what happened said, "We heard loud popping sounds and shouting. It was terrifying." People in nearby shops also heard the shots and took cover.

Some witnesses at first thought the Gardaí shot the man, but it was later confirmed he shot himself. The Armed Response Unit arrived and told the public to stay away. The situation was under control by 7:30 p.m.

The area was evacuated and sealed off, and a bomb squad was called just in case the man had explosives. His body will not be removed until the area is confirmed safe.

Local councilor Fergal Browne said it was shocking that something like this happened in Carlow, especially during a Bank Holiday weekend. He shared his thoughts for those who saw the frightening event.

Gardaí said there is no further danger to the public, but they asked people not to share videos online. Instead, they are asking anyone with footage or information to contact Carlow Garda Station.

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said he was shocked and offered support to the people affected. He added that gun violence is sporadic in Ireland, and it should stay that way.

Tánaiste Simon Harris also said the incident deeply saddened him.

"My thoughts are with the families affected and the local community in Carlow after what was a very serious and traumatic incident.

"I urge anyone who has information to speak to the Gardaí," he added.
