SHEFFIELD, U.K. - American plane maker Boeing has announced that it would be opening its first ever manufacturing plant in Europe in post-Brexit U.K.

The plant, proposed to be based in Sheffield, in northern England will be engaged in manufacturing trailing-edge actuation systems that would be used in Next-Generation 737, 737 MAX and 777 aircraft.

With an investment of over 20 million pounds ($24.98 million), the proposed 2,300-square-metre plant is part of the company’s bigger plan to begin in-house manufacturing of actuation components and systems in the U.S. and Britain.

Sir Michael Arthur, president of Boeing Europe and managing director of Boeing U.K. and Ireland said in a statement, “The U.K. provides Boeing with the talent and infrastructure we need to grow and maintain a high level of productivity and quality to meet our significant order book. Our decision to start manufacturing high-value components in the U.K. is a step-change in our engagement and a further example of Boeing’s commitment to grow here.”

Further, the company revealed that the new facility, Boeing Sheffield, would initially employ 30 people and that recruitment would begin next year.

It would be part of Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ Fabrication operations and will work with Boeing Portland.

According to reports, once the plant is operational, U.K. suppliers would be able to bid for work.

The Sheffield City Region Combined Authority has said that it would support a major R&D program that Boeing is to initiate along with AMRC, through grant funding, that is subject to agreeing the formal terms and conditions.

The major program with the AMRC would be aimed at developing new manufacturing techniques that can be applied in the new Boeing Sheffield facility.
