New report suggests a reason for Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 explosions

PanARMENIAN.Net - You didn't happen to miss the announcement - just under two months since it was discontinued, Samsung still hasn't offered an explanation for what caused the batteries in its Galaxy Note 7 to combust.

But while the South Korean tech giant carries out tests on the now-buried smartphone, a fresh report has suggested a reason for why it had a propensity for pyro, Digital Spy said.

A new report by Instrumental, a company that helps tech counterparts fix manufacturing issues, indicates the issue was, in fact, Samsung pushing the boundaries of the design a little too far.

After literally tearing apart the Note 7, Instrumental found that the battery sits too tightly within the device, meaning that any pressure could cause layers of lithium cobalt oxide and graphite to touch. Because science, this is something that can cause overheating and even explosions.

Of course, with Samsung sitting atop the smartphone tree, it should know better than anyone how to design these things. So how did the issue manage to make it through testing

Well, the report suggests that Sammy's engineers were cutting it too close with safety margins, and didn't leave enough time to amply test the fresh design, Digital Spy said.

"It's possible that Samsung's innovative battery manufacturing process was changing throughout development, and that the newest versions of the batteries weren't tested with the same rigor as the first samples," Instrumental noted in a blog post.

Samsung permanently ceased sales of the device back in October, just a day after announcing a temporary halt amid 'safe' device failures.
