Police watchdog probes cell rape video
Cape Town - A video of what appears to be a rape in a police cell is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) after allegations that the suspect could be a Montagu warrant officer currently facing another rape charge.
The officer is behind bars after being accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at the police station last month.
Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said the police watchdog had been informed of the YouTube video circulating on social media, butthat it was yet to be ascertained where the taped incident took place.
While some believe the incident to have been recorded in SA, there are those who argue that the recording was made in the police cells of the New York Police Department.
By Wednesday, the clip had been viewed 423 900 times after being published on September 23.
There are, however, some differences in the uniform worn by the perpetrator to that worn by members of the SAPS.
Raburabu said the video would form part of Ipid's investigation into the police officer, who was charged and appeared in the Ashton Magistrate's Court on a separate rape charge.
Family altercation
The teenager accused the 47-year-old officer of raping her on August 30.
She had been at the police station after an altercation with her family.
Her parents had asked the police to take her to the station for her to calm down.
She was directed to the trauma room and was allegedly attacked and raped at 21:30.
The girl was collected from the station by her mother and stepfather the next day and the incident was reported after she confided in her parents later that day.
The man made his first appearance on September 5 and he made a bail application on September 12.
Proceedings were expected to commence on September 21, but his lawyer asked that the matter be postponed to October 10, as they were still following up on certain aspects of the case.
