Polokwane - The Limpopo department of environment and tourism is investigating a case of suspected illegal game hunting in Polokwane.

Carcasses were discovered in a park outside the city's central business district on Thursday.

The department said it had received complaints from members of the public about the stench caused by the illegal dumping of carcasses of multiple species of game in the area north of Ladanna (opposite Makro) in Polokwane.

Spokesperson Simon Napo said the department thought it likely that "the dumping could be fuelled by the fact that the hunting season is in full swing and [the department] suspects that the culprits could also be involved in illegal hunting".

"The department dispatched officials from the investigation unit to follow-up on the issue which included taking sample from the carcasses for forensic investigations."

The authorities have appealed to members of the public to help with investigation and alert enforcement agencies to any suspicious activity that may be related to the case.
