ABU DHABI, 29th August, 2016 (WAM) -- The Board of Directors of the National Media Council (NMC) on Monday discussed a project for developing a legislative framework for regulating the media sector in the country, consistent with the federal law issued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan regarding its organisation and scope of jurisdiction.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State, and Chairman of the Board of Director of NMC.

The board praised the support and follow up shown by the wise leadership for issuing the law and extended profound thanks and appreciation to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates.

Dr. Al Jaber said that the law is a key pillar for the regulation of print, TV, radio and electronic publishing as well as regulating the relationship between the NMC and the media free zones. The law gives the NMC a new dimension to promote all regulatory aspects in a way that improves the legislative environment of the media in the country.

The NMC, he stressed, was making a holistic review of legislation regulating the sector. Work is under way on an integrated plan to issue a series of regulations and guidelines to cope with the latest media trends and to improve performance without interfering in the work and editorial policies of media establishments.

The meeting also discussed the strategy for customer happiness which aims to upgrade the services provided by the NMC to the levels that live up to the directives issued by the leadership and fulfil demands of the media work. The strategy was built up on the basis of the results of direct and frequent interaction with customers, together with observations and proposals presented by clients in order to improve services, to go beyond customer satisfaction to customer happiness.

Dr. Al Jaber said the strategy keeps abreast of the advanced rankings maintained by the UAE in international indices in various fields and comes in tandem with the concepts of happiness and positivity which are now an integral part of the local culture. In this context, he added, the NMC would provide a world-class package of services, given the fact that many clients of the NMC are representing international institutions, a factor that will elevate the positive image of the UAE.

During the meeting, the board reviewed the latest developments regarding the NMC's new building.

Progress in the project for participating in the Astana EXPO 2017 was also discussed. Work on the UAE pavilion will commence on early January 2017 so as to be fully ready before the grand opening in June 2017.
